Compartmentalization of responsibility also must be avoided in working out mechanisms for officer’s accountability. RESPOND TO THIS CLASSMATE
The police department is one of a kind in that they have been tasked with maintaining law and order by dealing with the crimes that go on in the community. Moreover, they also have a prerogative and monopolistic use of legitimate force. As such, the scope of police work is carried out in a context of intrinsic tension and maintaining order with respect for each person. In the US, there are close to 15766 police departments, 12656 of whom are found at the local level (Osce). With this number, it is only imperative to look at how they function from the organizational level, and more specifically, understanding the police performance through the administration is vital.
Administrative functions play an essential role in the ethical fulfillment of police goals. This is because they can create and implement efficient processes that can optimize performance, such as laying out procedures to be followed and the rules. Bad management, however, has a full domino effect on the department. For instance, the CRASH department began on the right foot, intending to combat crime-related crimes. However, in 1997 it was subjected to a rampant scandal, whereby some of its members, including Brian Hewitt and Rafael Perez, who, in exchange for his immunity, ended up opening up about all the misconducts that went on within the department, including corruption, planting evidence of the police among others. Since these atrocities had been going on for a while, the administration of the CRASH department was involved in the crimes, leading to its downfall.
Additionally, accountability is key to organizational leadership. It is true to state that when the organization’s administration is held accountable for its mission, there is an assurance that the organization’s existence can be justified. This can be applied from the top management position, where the leaders are held accountable for upholding the employee’s work ethic. If Compartmentalization of responsibility is allowed to thrive in the policing department with the leaders, the ultimate result is damage to the organization’s reputation. It is also important to note that the tone set by the leaders also has a role in the organization. People tend to get used to familiarity, from their positions to those they report to. If the leader is motivated, displays a hardworking tone, and is strict to the rules, then the entire dynamic of the organization adjusts to that. For instance, Mayor Adams has brought back the concept of tough-on-crime. By extension, his tone will trickle down to the low-level police so that they all achieve a common goal.
