Although we do still have war poets today, much of the poetic response to war can be found expressed in music. For this DB, you will…
1) Find a song from the last fifty years or so whose lyrics address war–any war from the Vietnam War until now.
2) Provide the title and artist and then discuss in 300+ words what this poem says about war or reveals about society in that particular war.
3) You may also wish to copy/paste the lyrics after your discussion, in case your classmates are not familiar with that particular song.

Example
The meaning of shelter by dictionary definition is a noun that means: a place giving
temporary protection from bad weather or danger. Now as humans, shelter is in
fact a right and as well as a need now in a different light, shelter could also have
the meaning of a safe place to have refuge, a haven to protect us from danger
hence “If I don’t get some shelter, I’m gonna fade away. Now this song released in
1969, written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards portrays the outlook of the world at
that time were drugs, war and civil rights where at its peak, which is what jagger
meant by a storm is threatening. The war of Vietnam was in fact a very violent and
rough era in history unlike world wars or other wars, people didn’t seem too keen
on the idea of this war, their was protest and people simply did not want to fight,
the song references the horrendous acts of the murder and rape that was occurring
and speaks about the fear people had to endure feeling as their life was being
threatened seeking for “shelter”. In the song where it says “see the fire is sweeping’
Our streets today burns like a red coal carpet mad bull lost its way” refers to the
extraordinary drug problem youth faced in that era the mad bull being the youth
and the red coal carpet meaning the path of destruction the youth were headed
towards. The song makes a reference to the particular civil rights movements that
were also going on in this era like the minority groups of African Americans and
Hispanics in the south and the woman’s rights movement this could be referred in
“the fire is sweepin’”. To end on a more positive note the song at the very end also
gives a bit of hope a sort of love not war type which is symbolized when said “I tell
you love, sister, it’s just a kiss away, It’s just a kiss away”!meaning Americans
should just love each other and not be at war.
