assignment is based off the following articles however i wish the focus of the paper to be about #1:
1.who influences U.s Foreign Policy
( DOI:10.1017/S000305540505152X )
2. Crossing borders International migration and national security
( http://dx.doi.org/10.1162/isec.2006.31.1.165 )
Prepare: Read the articles Who Influences U.S. Foreign Policy and Crossing Borders: International Migration and National Security. You will be choosing one of these articles to evaluate for this assignment.
Reflect: This week, you examined research questions, theories, and hypotheses. You learned that parsimony, productiveness, falsifiability, fertility, and replicability are essential characteristics within the research process. In addition, you learned that research questions usually fall into one of four types: normative, hypothetical, factual and procedural, or empirical.
Theory is the backbone of all research and is the causal mechanism that connects the independent variable to the dependent variable. A valid hypothesis enables researchers to identify observable implications and make predictions about relationships between the variables. This assignment allows you to evaluate an academically sound, published, professional research question and hypothesis. This assignment is great practice that will enhance your own political science or security research skills
In your paper:
Explain whether the research question is a normative, hypothetical, factual and procedural, or an empirical question.
Assess whether the research question is clearly specified.
Analyze the validity of the theory (theories) used to support the hypothesis.
Describe how the variables in the hypothesis can be operationalized.

Write a political risk analysis report for a multinational company/state institution on one of the issues provided in the list below. The company/institution plans to invest in alternative markets (or tries to develop a political strategy) but before this, wants to explore prospective political risks in target countries. In the report, as a political risk analyst, you are expected to
(1) analyse the case in detail,
(2) develop scenarios about the case, and
(3) offer concrete policy recommendations for your client based on the scenarios you developed. The political risk areas and the client groups are listed below:
A multinational hotel chain plans to invest in Brazil but wonders the political risks in the country. The company commissions a political risk analysis report to assess current political-economic developments and their potential impact on business activity.
A high-tech company (US-based) plans to invest in China but wonders the risk of trade & technology wars between China and the United States over next two years with its potential implications on foreign companies operating in the country.
An oil company plans to invest in Iraq but wonders whether there is a risk of state failure in the country over the next two years and wants to craft alternative strategies to hedge potential risks emanating from political instability.
A microchip technology company in South Korea planning to invest in Taiwan asks for a political risk analysis report about potential political risks in the region over the next twelve months and its likely impact on supply chain networks in microchip industry.
A multinational oil company plans to invest in Venezuela, but wonders the political risks associated with the regime crisis in the country.
Recommended formatting
Any legible fond type can be used, the recommended formatting is the following: fond size 12, double-spacing, with 2,5 cm margin on either side of the past. Any mainstream referencing style is acceptable (i.e. Harvard or footnote styles), as long as it used consistently in the essay. The recommended referencing style is Harvard style, where the surname of the author(s) appear(s) in parentheses in the main text along with the year of publication (and the specific page if needed). Then, all works cited in the text are included in a list under the heading ‘Bibliography’ at the end of the document.

Essay Topic: The Long 19th Century: From 1789 to 1914. Mechanical to Organic.
Structure: Intro, Main Argument, Conclusion
2. Think big: Try to make connections with the readings, philopophers and events studied (will attach material you should use). Clear, Good, academic Language,
4. Personal Opinion ( at the very end, if you have one)
Start the final with a catchysentence: i.e.: “History of menis the history of fictions…” “Finalexams require make-believe…”• Always start writing what you know best !!!• Use sense of humor (irony, wittiness…)• End the final with a catchy sentenceor quote: i.e.: “when we had the answers, they change the questions…” “You have nothing tolose but your chains”… or “YAY”
Refer to the readings and content I will attach. Must be believable that you sat in this class for an entire semester haha. No need for external references, just material and events we have studied in class.
Important things to mention in the essay: Karl Marx (attached) Morgan (Inventing the people peice (attached)). Charles Darwins philisophies and discoveries. ORGANIC AND MECHANIC SOLIDARITY. Durkheims peice is vital (will explain organic and mechanical solidarity as well as globilzation, and A TIMELINE IN THE MIDDLE PAGES VERY HELPFUL).
This essay should be a timeline of events in the 19th century that brought us to where we are socially, economically, politically today. Keep it fun and light, but make sure that all the content is correct and sounds informative with a deep understanding of the material. Cool title please.
In case you need it, here are my proffessors personal instructions for the essay:
Intro on fictions (can repeat things from Midterm’s introduction) and then develop arguments. If I were you I would go chronologically. It is less confusing and easier to follow. I have attached en extra piece that you could use for help with even more info on the 19th century which might trigger some of your ideas. Remember that the readings and the class slides are the basics. I would not forget the books reading The Rise of Liberalism with its three economies (The onion :), then Marx in one way or another, Darwin’s influence, Population politics and Durkheim’s anomie (!!!) as well as mechanical vs organic solidarity. Then you can introduce things from your own factory (art, architecture, Music !!!, urban planning, fashion, science, etc.). Remember that we are talking about so much change, prob like no other time before or after in history. Ask yourself why. Explain the reasons with your own language. Connect ideas, think big, give a global pic in the conclusion… and ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT IT IS ABOUT FICTIONS… CONSENT, ASSENT, DISSENT… AND AGAIN… Mention MORGAN! Show me you understand, show me you enjoy yourself… Use quotes, poems, sentences in other languages… impress the reader, be pedantic, use irony and sense of humor (a clear sign of intelligence…)… And if you dont know a name or a date, DONT SAY IT FOR GOD SAKE!
Thanks!
